Ultimate Men's Grooming Checklist

At one time, a man’s man wouldn’t be caught dead spending time grooming. That was back in the days where all a man needed to look “put together” was a little spit and polish. Fortunately, things have changed a lot since then.

How Do You Groom Yourself As A Man?

Modern men now put a lot of time into grooming. After all, in the concrete jungle, you’re wearing more than a loincloth and some well-placed leaves. How do you crush your grooming routine?

Below we’ll look at some ways to make the grooming process as quick and easy as possible. We'll also help you make your grooming routine effortless with stylish bathroom storage ideas that keep your moisturizer, toothbrush and razor and other bathroom accessories within reach (so you remember to use them).

How Do You Properly Groom?

What are some good grooming habits? The trick to being well-groomed is not to spend too many hours a day on grooming. It’s also not buying thousands of dollars’ worth of products.

A well-groomed man relies on a solid foundation. That way, it only takes a few minutes every day to pull a look together. Using small bathroom storage ideas and other bathroom hacks to keep your daily necessities organized will help you create an effortless daily routine (read: lazy yet well-groomed). With these shower storage ideas, you won't even need to open a drawer for that moisturizer you keep forgetting to apply - it'll be right next to your toothbrush in a convenient holder.

Let’s look at a few of those foundational habits you need to develop and the bathroom storage solutions you'll need for those habits.

Get A Fog-Free Shower Mirror For Precision Shaving

This is life-changing. Once you have one, you'll wonder how you ever lived without this simple tech. Did you even know that fog-free mirrors existed? Finally, you’ll be able to get up close with your fogless shaving mirror in the shower without a sink in the way for precision shaving. No more pesky shaving cuts and you'll be perfectly groomed each morning.

A matching shower caddy for your toothbrush and toothpaste as well as a shower razor holder will also help you get organized and allow you to do everything in the shower. Heck, a hanging shower toothbrush holder will help you cut down on your morning routine because you'll now be able to brush your teeth in the shower.

Pressed for ideas? If you need more small bathroom storage solutions, boy, we've got just the guide for you.

Have a Regular Barber’s Appointment

As you’re leaving your barber’s appointment, set up the next one. Depending on how fast your hair grows, plan it for four weeks’ time (at most). How do you know your hair will need a cut by then? It will.

Rather than waiting until your hair is looking particularly scraggly, this is a pre-emptive strike against sloppiness. That way, you will always look perfectly polished.

Another advantage of doing things this way is that you stick to the same barber. That’s important – you want a barber who you can trust to bring out the best in your hair.

Once you find the right barber, hold on to him—he gets used to the challenges you have with your hair and knows exactly what you want.

Find Your Perfect Hair Products

In this arena, I envy my grandfather. In his day, men’s hair products consisted of shampoo and Brylcreem. Today there is a scary array of choices out there.

Here again, having a good barber on your side is going to pay off. Ask him to recommend products based on your hair type. Find out what he recommends for the coarseness of your hair, which complements your style.

If you decide to go it alone, make sure you know what each product does and what type of hair it’s best for. Pomades, for example, will help to bring thick, unruly hair under control. It would be too heavy for fine, thin hair, though.

In that case, you’d need to look into something lighter like hair spray.

It may take some trial and error to find exactly the right match for your hair. Hang in there—it’s worth it.

Hunt for Your Signature Scent

A well-groomed man uses aftershave as an accent, not the star of the show. The idea is that you draw that “special someone” close and only then do they catch a whiff of how great you smell. If you go overboard, the smell is going to be overpowering.

Here a bit of trial-and-error is necessary. Fortunately, it’s easy to get samples. I’d recommend choosing your favorite scent and sticking to that one most of the time. If you like, use something richer in winter and lighter in summer.

Why not have seven bottles to choose from, though? For starters, getting through seven bottles of aftershave before they expire is difficult. Secondly, with a signature scent, you create a memorable impression. Whenever someone smells that scent, they think about you.

Do Invest in a Great Toothbrush

Manual toothbrushes work just fine, but nothing beats the cleaning power of an electric toothbrush. Invest in one and remove 11% more plaque than you can with manual brushing.

Of course, you also need to use it every day, at least twice a day. You want a great smile but also good oral health. Studies have also found a correlation between higher levels of plaque and the increased risk of heart disease. A razor, toothbrush and toothpaste organizer like The Harvey & Oliver Set will also remind you of what you need to do every morning, if you're wondering how to organize your bathroom.

Organize Your Bathroom For A Faster Morning Routine

Consider shaving and brushing your teeth in the shower with a bathroom shower organizer so you can finish your morning routine faster. Our 4-in-1 Silicone Tile Series ensures you have a convenient hook for your towel as towel storage, a cool little holder for your razor, a magnetic tile for anything magnetic, like tweezers or nail clippers, and a toothbrush holder. Best of all, you can position these anywhere you'd like and they're easily removable. Chuck them in the dishwasher whenever they need a clean.

Get Some “Manscaping” Done

I’m not talking about ripping all the hair out. In fact, I did try that once. After I regained consciousness, I must admit it was an interesting feeling (that is, until the hair started growing back and itched like crazy!).

I also got in-grown hairs, so I’ve never done it again.

No. What I’m talking about here is more keeping things neat and tidy. Why not pull out some scissors and neaten things up a bit? Our magnet tile, The Archer, is an excellent way to store your magnetic tools if you're looking for bathroom organizer ideas.

Consider a shave or smaller waxing areas, too. Just one thing to remember – the tools used for manscaping should never be used on your face!

Use a Face Scrub

Okay, when I joined the scrub club, my buddies teased me mercilessly. The joke, however, was on them. I no longer had to worry about ingrown hairs or bad acne outbreaks.

Anyhow, my buddies soon cottoned on, and now we have a scrub club. By telling you this, I’m breaking the first rule of Scrub Club: don’t talk about Scrub Club. That said, it’s something you need to know, so it’s okay.

You have a few options here. There are washes with a gentle abrasive action that can be used daily (that’s what I use). It’s amazing because it scrubs away the dead skin cells and I’m able to get an even closer shave as a result.

If your skin’s a little more sensitive, you can use the scrub on alternate days. If the idea of using a scrub is intimidating, get a coarse washcloth. Use this when wiping down your face.

Do not to use any fabric softener when washing it, though. The coarse texture acts as a scrub of sorts.

Use a microbead-free scrub on a Monday morning to scrub the weekend off your face, and every other day of the week go for a plain face wash that's less abrasive. You'll be looking better than you feel in no time.

Get Your Facial Hair Under Control

Hands up if you give your razor a vacation when you go on vacation. Of course, you do! That razor works hard, and it deserves a break.

If you decide you like the look of facial hair when you get back, that’s great, too. Just realize that you’ll need to do more regular grooming sessions.

We’re not suggesting you go to the same lengths as the fictional detective, Hercule Poirot. You do need to keep the hair neat and tidy, though. Trim it, shape it, and run a comb through it occasionally.

If you prefer a clean-shaven look, that’s fine, too. Here are some tips to get the perfect shave every time:

· Wash your face before starting. If possible, use a scrub. Rub it in using circular motions and then rinse it off.

· Dampen a washcloth in warm water. Place it over your skin for about thirty seconds. This helps to open up the pores and makes it easier to get a closer shave.

· Consider using shaving oil to make it easy for the razor to glide over your skin.

· Soak the razor blades in warm water to help open the pores.

· Consider going to a professional once a week where possible.

Treat Your Toes

Your feet take a pounding every day. They deserve some TLC. Fortunately, it’s easy enough to do.

Soften the skin in the shower or bath and then use a pumice stone to scrape off the dead skin.

Finally, drench your feet in a heavy-duty moisturizing cream. Put socks on for fifteen minutes to help the cream sink in better. If possible, wear socks all day, or overnight.

Get Rid of That Unibrow

You just have to look at actors like Sean Connery and George Clooney to know those bushy eyebrows can be sexy. Fortunately for us, we don’t have to tweeze off half our brows as the ladies do.

That said, you don’t want Kramer-style eyebrows, either. If you have a unibrow, pull out the tweezers. Do a quick tidy up of errant hairs on the top of the eyelids, too.

Check Your Nails

You don’t have to go full mani-pedi, but you should keep your nails in good shape. Trim the nails regularly. Massage in a small bit of moisturizer around the nailbed. This prevents ugly hangnails.

Do Use a Moisturizer

How do men groom their face? Twenty years ago, I’d have been laughed off the field for making this suggestion. Hang in there for a second. Choose a slightly tinted moisturizer, and you’ll work up a healthy glow—no spray tan necessary.

Organize Your Travel Toiletries In A Dopp Kit

When’s the last time you travelled, whether it was for a weekend or hopping on an international flight? A Dopp kit is useful to have around and will last forever. Have one ready at all times and impress the ladies with how you’ve got everything organized in a stylish waterproof pouch. The Koby Bag is a great choice for everything you'll need on the trip. See our post on The Right Way To Pack A Dopp Kit for more information.

Stay Perfectly Groomed With An Organized Bathroom

Effortless grooming is all about getting the basics right. Using a gentle scrub in place of your daily face wash helps keep skin clear and reduces the risk of ingrown hairs. Slapping on some moisturizer afterward keeps your skin looking young, healthy and glowing. Bathroom organizers from Tooletries can help with your grooming routine - it's easier to remember to do all these things if you have them placed right next to you. Their stylish design doesn't hurt either.

Taking the time to neaten up your nails helps to offset painful hangnails. In fact, all the suggestions I’ve made today have very real benefits aside from the aesthetic effects.

Think of these basic grooming steps as a painter’s priming canvas. Get the underpainting right, and it’s easy to create a masterpiece. Purchase bathroom storage products from Tooletries here and start your grooming routine today.
